Early in August last I wrote to the Consul at Canton that, having read in the paper, that Britishers over 40 would be accepted in the Army, I being over that age, a British subject born between the years 1876-1880, that I was of Jewish parentage originally a Turkish subject fought in the Boer War, was wounded whilst a trooper & prepared to offer my services subsequently held a Commission in the nation &, in the event of acceptance would be prepared to come over at my own expense either in the Active Army or Auxiliary forces, in order that they might refer the matter to Hong Kong & that of the home Authorities.
